Authorisation guide for pharmacist and intern pharmacist vaccinators
Important notes
- Pharmacies mustobtain acontract from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora to administer funded National Immunisation Schedule (NIS) vaccines and have them listed on their Integrated Community Pharmacy Services Agreement (ICPSA). Not all NIS vaccines are available via pharmacy, however if within vaccinator scope they may be administered in other settings, e.g. outreach.
- Pharmacistandintern pharmacist vaccinators are permitted to administer certain vaccines (within their scope, as outlined below) without a prescription based on the medicine classification of those vaccines.
- Pharmacist vaccinators who feel confident to safely administer a NIS vaccine outside oftheir authorisationcan do so with a prescription from 3yrs+ if clinically indicated.
- Pharmacistauthorisedvaccinators or pharmacist authorised vaccinators with conditions may administer all NIS vaccines including special group vaccinations without a prescription. If the consumer does not meet eligibility requirements for special group vaccination (i.e. it will not be funded), then a prescription is required (unless permitted by the medicine classification, or they have local authorisation with specific extended scope listed as part of their authorisation).
- Registered pharmacists do notrequirea Standing Order to supply or administer adrenaline as adrenaline is a pharmacist-only medicine. Intern pharmacist vaccinators are not authorised to administer adrenaline. In the event of anaphylaxis, the supervising pharmacist must prepare and administer the adrenaline.
- The vaccinator authorisation chart on the following page does notprovideany funding eligibility
information on NIS vaccines. Information on eligibility criteria can be found on the Pharmac website here.

| The following footnotes relate to [1] pharmacist authorised vaccinator with conditions, [2] MMR, [3] RSV vaccines, and [4] Shingrix overleaf: [1] Provision to vaccinate from 6 weeks under 1:1 supervision of an authorised vaccinator with at least 6 months’ experience vaccinating pēpē and young tamariki aged under 3 years. [2] Immunity to measles is also assumed in people who lived in New Zealand prior to 1969. Other people who lived in countries and remote island nations with limited circulating measles prior to 1969 may not be immune to measles if not previously immunised with a measles- containing vaccine. Therefore, they can be considered for funded MMR vaccination, particularly in the case of a community outbreak. Those born prior to 1969 do not need to be recalled for MMR vaccination but may benefit from a clinical discussion about their risk. [3] RSV is only available as a private purchase vaccine. It is not on the National Immunisation Schedule; the medicine classification allows it to be administered by pharmacist vaccinators without a prescription to those aged 60 years and over, or those aged 50-59 years at increased risk for RSV disease. [4] Shingrix can only be administered by a pharmacist vaccinator to a person aged 50 years or over; or a person aged 18-49 years at increased risk of herpes zoster. |
